This CDU380 linear motor drive used on sorter conveyors was showing a fault on the main sorter computer. We collected the unit from our customer’s site and brought it to our works. We linked the unit up to our test rig and we were getting a fault condition that pointed to the inverter being faulty. During the assessment we noticed that the windings were breaking down on the Baker surge test, the winding encapsulation was also cracked. The motor was sent to our rewind department for a rewind and full encapsulation. In the meantime our electronics engineers set about the repair to the control section. The inverter was replaced with one from our stock, the control card was checked over and we found faults that are linked to the digital output to the sorter control. These were rectified and the PCB was checked. The cooling fan was overhauled and the main chassis and heat-sink were cleaned. The CDU was then reassembled with the rewound motor. We linked the unit up to our test rig that controls and verifies each operation of the CDU. The customers program was uploaded to the drive, the digital ‘heath condition’ outputs were linked to our test rig and the unit was tested via the sorter controller interface as it would see on site. We then put the unit into its analogue communications, digital communication and diagnostic modes to check its operation via the control card. The motor was left on an extended test to verify long term operation of the CDU.
