We received this spindle motor only after another repair company had failed to spot a fundamental fault. The quality of the surface finish on the product produced on this machine tool was not acceptable when operating at full speed.
As a temporary measure the customer managed to limp along running the machine tool at half speed but with much reduced productivity. In an automotive production environment this situation could not be tolerated. After explaining to the customer about our Spindle Motor Test facility they decided to try us out.
When we received the motor we checked the nameplate and found the maximum speed of this motor was 6000rpm. With the customer witnessing the test we programmed our Spindle Rig to run the motor at 6000rpm. At this speed we noticed excessive vibration from the non drive end of the motor. The motor was stripped and the mechanical fits were checked. From our initial test we had some indication as to where the problem may be. We found the non drive end bearing housing was ever so slightly out on size. (This was missed by the other repair company as we understand that they checked the bearing fit with the old bearing) The housing was repaired, the rotor balanced to G1.0, new bearings were supplied and fitted, the hall-effect feedback sensor was fitted and checked for correct output levels and the motor was test run. This time at 6000rpm, the motor ran smoothly and within vibration tolerance.
