Occasionally we see traction auxiliary repairs that are a bit different from the usual motors, generators, blower fans and smoothing chokes. One of our customers had a gearbox speed sensor that had failed. We offered to assess the unit with a view to carrying out a repair. Our customer told us he should be getting a 1KΩ reading from the terminals but the unit he had was open circuit. We dismantled the unit and found that the coil was indeed open circuit. This type of unit has a permanent magnet core so we were unable to burn out the old potting compound. After manually removing the old coil we back-wound it to gather the number of turns and wire size. A new coil was wound and this was fitted to the core and potted. The sensor was re-built and fitted to the locomotive.
