This AEI main traction motor was sent to us after it had failed in service. The motor has suffered an overspeed condition and the banding on the armature had lifted. We dismantled the motor and assessed the condition. The banding had lifted at the commutator end next to the risers. We also assessed the condition of the banding at the coil support end. This appeared in good condition however we decided the armature needed to be completely rebanded. We stripped the old banding off the armature and proceeded to clean the unit. The armature circuit was electrically checked and passed. The commutator was skimmed, undercut, chamfered and profiled. The armature was rebanded with glass banding tape and cured, then VPI treated and cured. The motor was assembled, the main drive pinion was refitted and the motor was tested before being dispatched.
