BTH Traction Motor Overhaul

We received this BTH traction motor for overhaul after a locomotive from the UK rail network was taken out for an inspection. The motor was received at our works and our traction motor engineers started to dismantle the motor. Typically on these types of motor the IR readings are low due to dirt ingress in the windings. This motor was no different. The armature and field case were thoroughly cleaned to remove all contaminants. All electrical tests were carried out to ensure the circuits were in a serviceable condition. Once we were happy with the IR readings the armature and field case were VPI dipped and stoved. The commutator was skimmed, undercut, chamfered and profiled and then the armature was balanced. The brushgear was overhauled and we noticed burn marks on the brush gear leads, these were replaced. New bearings were fitted to the armature and the motor was assembled. New brushes were fitted and the motor was tested prior to painting and dispatch to our customer.
